“L’amor venia amb taxi” is a musical “made in Cubana” and done “the Catalan way”
La Cubana will premiere a new musical on September 17 at the Teatre Romea in Barcelona.
This show wants to be a heartfelt tribute to amateur theatre in Catalonia, because it is only fair to recognize its importance within the country’s cultural environment. Most of us who work in this profession come from amateur theatre. To pay this tribute, we have chosen as our excuse a play that has been performed by the majority of amateur theatre groups in Catalonia: L’amor venia amb taxi, by Rafael Anglada.
However, as you already know, behind every La Cubana project, there is always something completely different. In this case, if we say we are doing “a musical,” it is because we truly are. But of course, it is a musical done “the Catalan way” and “our way”: with the signature ingredients of our company: humor, surprises, audience participation, and a deep affection for a special way of understanding theatre. When you come to see it, you’ll understand!
This tribute is being held at the Teatre Romea, not by chance, but because this venue has long been considered the temple of Catalan theatre. It has also been the epicenter of this industry: from Editorial Millà on Sant Pau Street, the Salvador brothers on Carretes Street, the Peris brothers on Junta de Comerç Street, to Damaret on La Rambla.
For La Cubana, returning to the Teatre Romea holds a very special meaning, as it was the first venue—after performing street theatre—where we staged our first indoor production: La Tempestad, in 1986. Moreover, this show allows us to celebrate our 45th anniversary as a theatre company.
